| Wow! Best ever GCSE results! |
|
South Craven is delighted to announce their best ever GCSE results.
98% of the students in Year 11 gained five or more A*- C grades – a 10% improvement over the last two years and 2% above the 2009 figures! With results well above the national average, the Cross Hills school has seen the headline figure of five or more A*- C grades improve by 48% over the last five years - a sustained year-on-year improvement that has put them amongst the national ‘most improved’ schools as acknowledged by the SSAT (The Specialist Schools and Academies Trust). |
read more... In the context of these headline figures, the area of greatest success has been in the increase of the number of students achieving 5A*-C (including English and Mathematics): this year 63% of students achieved this national measure.
73% of South Craven students achieved a GCSE A*- C grade in English and 70% achieved a GCSE A*- C grade in Mathematics.
Amongst the excellent results for all, some students demonstrated their ability to perform to the very highest standards across a variety of subjects. One such student was Millie Whitaker with fourteen A* grades in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, German, Mathematics, English, English Literature, Statistics, Religious Studies, Geography, Performing Arts (2) and Engineering (2). ‘It is highly unusual for any student to gain the maximum grades in every area of study, but Millie’s ability and hard work is apparent from these well-deserved grades,’ said Mr Shayne Toy, the proud Head of Year 11.
Other star students and top achievers this year included Nathan Cant with ten A* grades, two A grades and a C; Hannah Schofield with eight A* grades and three A grades; James Heseltine with five A* grades, nine A grades; Kayleigh Davies and David Paley with six A* grades each – Kayleigh with an additional six A grades and David with five A grades and two B grades; and Ruth Waters and James Bannister who achieved twelve and eleven A*/A grades, respectively.
The outgoing Head of Year 11, Mr Shayne Toy, was thrilled with the summer results: “Every one of our students at South Craven has performed to the best of their ability as a result of their own efforts, supported by the curriculum, pastoral and administrative staff at the school.”

As well as congratulating students, we also wish to extend our congratulations to parents and families for their support. Finally, I would like to thank the staff for all their hard work and commitment which has made this success possible. If anyone is interested in joining the Sixth Form in September, please contact the school.

Unless you have been asleep these past few months, you cannot have missed the news, that along with practically every other country, this one is experiencing a recession. Balancing the country’s books, trying to save money and budgeting has become the order of the day for governments.
Here in school, the PSHEE department are trying to get students to look closely at their attitude to money |
read more...
- to understand how personal financial decisions have consequences that affect us and others
- to increase awareness of the relative benefits of saving and spending in everyday situations
- to think about a long term view of handling money so that as they enter into the adult world of work, they will be able to manage their money more intelligently.
Miss Rachel Partington, Head of PSHEE, has been working closely with Year 8 students these past few weeks. My Money Week has seen the students managing a company, a Rock Band, budgeting for what they need to buy and managing the incoming cash. They have also created their own ‘Moneyfesto Challenges’ which has involved making pledges and supporting each other’s money saving suggestions.
To round off the sessions a competition for the whole of KS3 was launched; How would you spend £50 in order to benefit the school?
There was a huge number of entries and a great range of wild and wacky suggestions. Miss Partington was overwhelmed by the students’ creativity and enthusiasm.
The ultimate winner was Zak Kesic in Year 7. Zak had recently had to visit the Children’s Ward at Airedale Hospital after an asthma attack and knew from experience how scary such a visit can be. His idea was to donate the £50.00 to the Ward, recognising that not only would this mean that the money went to a good cause but it would also build links with the Hospital and hopefully would encourage guest speakers to come to school and explain how the Ward works.
Zak will actually be donating the money to the Hospital shortly and we look forward to seeing his plan in action.

| The Solar Powered Challenge Competition |
|
The Solar Powered Challenge is a competition for KS3 that takes place annually during the NYBEP Engineering Inspirations event at Elvington Air Museum. Teams from Year 7 and 8 were entered into two categories, "Freeform" where anything goes and "Scirocco" based on a standard kit. |
read more... The model boats were designed and built at lunchtimes and afterschool in Mr Scott's STEM engineering club (with the able assistance of Mr Evans and Mr Buckenham).
On the day, HMS Craven built and captained by Tom Varley and Ewan Smith sailed to victory in the Scirocco class. This initial success was soon followed by an excellent second place in the highly competitive Freeform class for SS Southy built and captained by Zak Kesic, Harry Simons, Lee Hopkins and George Johnson.
The end of the competition was marked by a fly past by a WWII Hurricane fighter plane which came in low over the airfield. Definitely one of the highlights of an enjoyable and successful day.

Having at last, just finished taking the last exam of her 4 A Levels, Emily Yates is now looking forward to going to Egypt with the Yorkshire Schools Exploration Society for a month at the end of July. She will be the first wheelchair bound person to go on such a trip with the Society in its 30 year history and has had to raise £2000.00 to claim her place. |
read more... The first days will be spent scuba diving, when she hopes to qualify for her PADI qualification (Professional Aqua Diving Institute) and then from there, she and the group are heading for the Sinai Desert where they will live with the Bedouin tribes, helping out and learning about their day to day lives. Transport will be by camel!
Emily is no stranger to such adventures as she went to Africa with a similar group two years ago and experienced cage diving and safari, so riding a camel and scuba diving should hold no fears!
Before all this she is accompanying the school history group on their visit to Belgium and the First World War Battlefields, and once back home in August she will have to start getting herself sorted for University. Phew!

| Student speaks to Lord Coe and Olympic Committee |
|
On Tuesday 15th June Simone Santabarbara from South Craven School presented at the National Inspire Mark networking day at Leeds University. |
read more... Simone spoke to the audience of business representatives, Olympic athletes, the 2012 team and LOCOG (London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games).
Simone delivered a passionate speech about how he is inspired to be a leader and how the ethos and values of the Olympics have influenced him as an individual and a leader. Simone was one of only three young leaders picked from the whole of North Yorkshire to present on the day and presented Craven in an excellent light. He then was interviewed by the Minister for Sport and the Olympics to join him for a half an hour discussion about the role of sport in this country for young people.
Lord Coe then met Simone and the other young leaders and spent time talking to them all about their role, and the impact that the Olympic Games will have in them.
This was an excellent day for Craven as Simone represented the District on a National Level. Well Done Simone!
