The key aim of the pastoral system at South Craven is to ensure that each student achieves at the best possible level and leaves the school as a rounded individual ready to enter further study or the world of work. We operate a year group system, with each year group led by an Assistant Headteacher or Head of Year, supported by a teaching assistant who works with more vulnerable children or those at risk of underachievement. A Deputy Head oversees the whole pastoral team.
Each student is carefully placed into a form on entry and remains in the form until the end of Year 11. In Post 16, students still receive the support of a form tutor. A form group has one form tutor for Years 7 and 8, another tutor for Years 9, 10 and 11 and a third for Post 16.
This gives tutors a chance to get to know the students in their care well but also means that they specialise in a particular key stage, so that they can offer the best advice and guidance possible. The form tutor plays a key role in helping students to achieve, and all tutors regularly review progress with the students in their care. At the end of each term, there is a formal opportunity for parents to meet with their child’s form tutor to review progress on our Student Progress Monitoring days.
The day at South Craven begins with a 20 minute tutorial session, during which the form tutor has the time to talk to students, monitor their progress and deliver a planned programme designed to help them to become confident and independent learners. On one morning each week, this is replaced by a year group assembly, delivered by the Head of Year or other senior member of staff.
The SIxth Form at South Craven has a dedicated pastoral team.
